Gulet Isse

2023 TRANS & NONBINARY COHORT

Gulet Isse is a trans, Somali American screenwriter, actor, and poet from New Orleans. Their art illuminates the depths of grief, sexual liberation, queer love as a nexus for spiritual healing, and unconventional family dynamics. Born to Muslim immigrants, their lens is distinctly informed by their faith and a genetic predisposition to nomadism, which has forever changed how they see the world. Shortly after graduating from USC, Isse made their TV debut starring in Little America on Apple TV+, marking the first time a major Hollywood production has been helmed by a predominantly Somali cast & crew. They were subsequently selected as a 2022 Lambda Literary Screenwriting Fellow, under the mentorship of Amos Mac. Isse was also named as a semi-finalist for the 2022 WIF X Black List Feature Residency. Isse co-founded the BXD Collective, a community of underrepresented artists from around the world. Over the past several years, they’ve thrown a number of exhibitions and events through the Collective, showcasing art of various mediums and offering a platform for some of the brightest talent of tomorrow. Isse’s greatest hope is to open even more spaces for those on the margins to take center stage and claim their glory.
